Tesla folded the two-seat, controls-free Cybercab into its existing Robotaxi app at an invite-only Austin event on 3 September, and announced the fleet had passed 1 million cumulative unsupervised autonomous miles. Both halves need their denominators.
The mileage against the comparator
Tesla's previous public figure was 380,000 miles, given on the 22 July second-quarter call, meaning about 620,000 miles were added in six weeks. On the same page the Waymo comparator is 200 million miles across 14 cities. Tesla is at roughly 0.5% of that, and 62% of its own total arrived in the last six weeks — a scaling curve rather than a track record.
What "unsupervised" is doing
Tesla has moved from a front-seat safety driver to a chase-car format with occasional remote control of the vehicles. Remote operators intervening is precisely what the word invites readers to assume does not happen. The accurate statement is that there is no human in the vehicle, not that there is no human in the loop.
The fleet is 45 cars
Musk's phrase — a storm of Cybercabs — describes 45 vehicles registered for deployment in one metro. Model Y robotaxis outnumber them roughly ten to one in Austin, so the purpose-built vehicle does about a tenth of the driving. Across six cities Tesla runs more than 200 robotaxis in total. The Cybercab has no steering wheel, no pedals and no in-cabin way to take over, running on Tesla's AI4 computer.
What the received framing gets wrong
This is not a new city, a new permit or a new capability — it is a new vehicle body dropped into a service running in Austin since June 2025, on the same autonomy stack already carrying passengers. Nor was any federal approval granted this week: Tesla self-certifies the Cybercab to federal motor-vehicle safety standards rather than using NHTSA's 2,500-unit exemption, so there is no bespoke authorisation to point at. Coverage also split on whether public rides were live on day one, with some outlets reporting attendees could hail within the geofence and others putting general access at least a week out; general availability should not be asserted.
