Taiwanese trade press reported on August 3 that MediaTek is readying 400G and 448G SerDes intellectual property on a 2nm process for the second half of 2027, positioning it against Broadcom for Google's TPU v10 and Meta's next custom AI accelerator.

Why SerDes decides these deals

SerDes is the circuitry that serialises data between chips. In racks where hundreds of accelerators behave as one machine, it is the gating IP for scale-up fabric — the component that decides how wide a model can be spread before interconnect becomes the bottleneck. It is also the specific lever by which MediaTek has been taking custom-accelerator business off Broadcom, which has held something close to a monopoly on the segment.

What is already won, and what is not

MediaTek's current 336G SerDes is designed into TPU v9, which enters mass production in early 2028. Intel's EMIB-T advanced packaging is confirmed for the company's AI ASIC programme. TPU v10 and Meta's accelerator are neither won nor lost: the reporting describes the new IP as "a key enabler for bidding," and Google is understood to be dual-sourcing against Broadcom regardless.

Two figures that are not new and not Google's

The lift in MediaTek's 2027 AI ASIC share target to 15-20% from 10-15% traces to its earnings call on July 31, where the chief executive also guided to more than $2 billion of datacentre revenue this year. Neither belongs to this week. The circulating estimate of 12-15 million TPU v9 units ordered in 2028 comes from a GF Securities analyst, not from Google or MediaTek.
