At SEMI forums in Taipei on 31 August, around 02:03–02:15 UTC (10:03 local), TSMC laid out a packaging roadmap and attached a headline to it: roughly 50 times the compute by 2029. The roadmap underneath is concrete. The multiplier is doing more work than it looks.

The roadmap that is actually specified

CoWoS today ships at about 5.5 reticles of package area carrying 12 HBM stacks. TSMC's 2029 target is more than 14 reticles and 24 stacks. On the 3D side, SoIC is projected to reach roughly 56x the interconnect density. HBM4 base dies move to the N12 process, which TSMC characterises as 45% lower power and 2.5x the bandwidth. Its COUPE optical engine was quoted at 0.06 dB insertion loss against 1.38 dB for the incumbent approach at 112 Gbps.

Where the multiple comes from

Do the arithmetic the roadmap invites. Package area rises about 2.5x (5.5 to over 14 reticles). HBM stacks double (12 to 24). Those two alone, before any transistor gets faster, account for most of a 5x. The rest is node scaling, memory bandwidth and interconnect density compounding on top. So the honest description is that a 2029 system will be substantially bigger and better fed, not that a 2029 chip computes fifty times faster than a 2026 one.

What the common framing gets wrong

Two things. First, the baseline is never stated. A 50x claim without a named starting configuration and a named workload is not a measurement; it is a projection with an implied denominator. Coverage that reports it as "TSMC says chips will be 50x faster" invents a per-chip speedup the company did not claim. Second, the widely repeated line that silicon photonics will exceed 50% of the transceiver market by 2027 is a forecast delivered by a TSMC executive speaking in an industry-forum capacity — a market call, not a TSMC product commitment, and not TSMC data.

Why it still matters

Because the physical numbers are the constraint everyone downstream lives with. Reticle count and HBM stack count set the ceiling on how large a single accelerator package can be, and those are the figures that determine what an accelerator in 2029 can hold. They are also the figures that are checkable. The multiplier is marketing arithmetic laid over a real roadmap — the roadmap is the news.
