Nvidia and Safe Superintelligence announced a long-term strategic partnership at 13:00 UTC on 27 July. Ilya Sutskever's lab, founded in 2024 and led with Daniel Levy, has shipped nothing publicly. It has now traded a stake to its chip supplier in exchange for an order-of-magnitude increase in compute.

What the companies actually said

The release states that Nvidia "has additionally made an investment in SSI" and that access to the Vera Rubin platform will let SSI increase its compute "by an order of magnitude." Sutskever: "We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so." SSI has separately described the investment as substantial and the compute increase as 10x within 12 months. Existing investors named in the release: Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks and Sequoia.

The number that is not in the release

Headlines put this at $5 billion. That figure appears nowhere in Nvidia's announcement, nowhere in SSI's comments, and nowhere in the IR posting — it is wire reporting from Bloomberg and Reuters, and one outlet's own source would say only "multiple billions." The $32 billion valuation travelling alongside it is PitchBook data on a prior round, not a new post-money for this deal; SSI has raised more than $7 billion to date. Pairing the two numbers implies a priced round that was never announced.

Not a financing, exactly

The structure matters more than the amount. This is an equity investment bundled with a commitment to buy compute on the investor's own next-generation hardware — the circular pattern now visible across Nvidia's OpenAI and Korean deals. Nvidia calls it a partnership, which is more honest than calling it a raise. No equity percentage, warrant structure or GPU count was disclosed, so it cannot be determined from the public record whether this is cash for shares or compute credits wearing a suit.

What Nvidia is buying

Not revenue. SSI's entire proposition is that it will not ship intermediate products. What Nvidia gets is a position inside frontier research rather than a customer relationship alongside it — and the last lab of consequence that had not committed to a silicon vendor is now committed.
