The market's most crowded AI-hardware trade wobbled hard. SK Hynix shares fell roughly 15% in Asian trading on July 13, 2026 — the company's largest single-day drop — after a brokerage warned its profits would disappoint, and the sell-off spread to memory-chip makers around the world.
The trigger
Korean brokerage KIS estimated SK Hynix's second-quarter 2026 profit would come in about 8% below the analyst consensus, citing slower-than-expected shipments of HBM4 — the newest generation of high-bandwidth memory — and the company's heavy reliance on a concentrated set of HBM contracts. For a stock that had run up on relentless AI-memory optimism, a single cautious note was enough to puncture sentiment.
The ripple
The damage did not stay in Seoul. US-listed memory names sold off in sympathy, with Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital each dropping about 6%. Those stocks had been among the year's best performers, powered by the same HBM demand now being questioned — which is precisely why a wobble at the sector's bellwether hit them so quickly.
A business model in flux
The same day, a Bloomberg Opinion piece argued that AI demand is breaking the traditional memory-chip business model. Historically a brutal commodity cycle of boom and bust, memory is being reshaped by HBM into something more concentrated: a handful of suppliers — SK Hynix, Samsung and Micron — capturing outsized margins by selling scarce, high-margin chips bundled tightly with AI accelerators. That concentration is lucrative, but it also makes the whole sector hostage to the shipment schedule of a single product line.
Why it matters to the AI trade
HBM is the memory that feeds AI accelerators the data they need, and its supply has been as much a bottleneck as the GPUs themselves. A shortfall — or even a whiff of one — in HBM4 shipments therefore reads as a signal about the pace of the whole AI buildout. The sharp reaction shows how tightly the market has wound its expectations around a narrow set of AI-memory suppliers, and how quickly those expectations can unwind.
