Conversations that Claude users had deliberately shared by link were being returned as ordinary search results over the weekend, discoverable with a single query: site:claude.ai/share.
What was found
Users in r/ClaudeAI surfaced the issue, reporting shared chats indexed across Google, Bing and Brave. The reported cause is mundane and specific: the "Share with link" pages lacked a noindex tag, the piece of metadata that tells a crawler to skip a page. Google's results largely disappeared soon afterwards; the pages persisted longer on Bing and Brave.
This is not a breach
Nothing was hacked and no account was compromised. Every page involved was one a user chose to publish by generating a share link. What failed was indexing control — the gap between "anyone with the link" and "anyone with a search box." Framing this as leaked private conversations describes a different incident than the one that happened.
What is verified and what is not
The indexing is confirmed by multiple outlets. The colourful part is not: reports that the exposed chats included crypto wallet material and credentials trace to Reddit posts, and the scale estimates run from hundreds to thousands depending on who is counting. Neither has been independently verified.
Anthropic has not said anything
There is no statement from the company. "Anthropic fixed it" is an inference drawn from results disappearing, not a confirmed action — the deindexing could be Google's own doing. Users who want to close their own exposure can do it directly under Settings → Privacy → Shared Chats; links stay live for anyone holding the URL until they are unshared.
OpenAI did this first
The pattern is a near-exact repeat of the discoverable-ChatGPT-chats episode in 2025, after which OpenAI removed the sharing feature outright. The second lab to ship the same default has now made the same mistake.
