Claude Cowork Now Learns a Task by Watching You Do It Once

A new "Record a skill" feature captures your screen, clicks and spoken commentary, then turns the demonstration into a reusable skill Claude can run on its own.

Anthropic shipped a feature to Claude Cowork on July 21 that changes how you teach an AI agent a task: instead of writing instructions, you record yourself doing the job once and narrate what you are doing. Claude turns the recording into a reusable skill.

How it works

The feature — "Record a skill" — sits in the + menu of the Claude desktop app, alongside the add-files option. It captures screen activity, mouse clicks, keystrokes and voice commentary. When you stop recording, Claude synthesises the demonstration into a skill that lands in your library and can be re-run on demand without repeating the walkthrough. The narration is not decorative: spoken reasoning is how Claude infers why each step happens.

Who gets it

It is available to Pro, Max and Team subscribers. Anthropic announced it through its @claudeai account with no blog post and no documentation — so there are no published limits on recording length or file size, no stated OS requirements, and, more conspicuously, no published retention or privacy policy for screen recordings that by definition capture whatever else is on screen.

Where Cowork is going

Cowork launched in January 2026 as a research-preview desktop agent aimed at non-technical users, initially on macOS for Pro and Max. It expanded to web and mobile for Max subscribers on July 7 — two weeks before this feature. Skills themselves are reusable packages of task-specific instructions that Claude loads when relevant.

The bet underneath

Every agent product has the same adoption problem: someone has to specify the task precisely enough for the agent to repeat it, and most people cannot write that specification. Demonstration sidesteps the prompt entirely — the pitch is that showing beats describing.

Why It Matters

The hardest part of deploying agents in an office is not capability, it's specification — most workflows live in someone's head and have never been written down. Learning from a demonstration is the most credible attempt yet to skip that step, though shipping screen capture with no published retention policy is exactly the detail enterprise buyers will ask about first.
