An open-source project co-built by Huawei divisions has shipped WorkSwarm, an office agent "swarm", releasing it first on the HarmonyOS PC app market on 15 August. Windows and Mac are supported alongside.
The design idea worth noting
WorkSwarm runs in two modes: a single agent for light work, and a cluster mode where multiple roles divide a task. The framing is Human on the Swarm and Human in the Swarm — the human checks progress, takes a task, finishes it and hands to the next agent, sitting inside the team rather than prompting it from outside. The document demo has two AI writers and one person taking turns extending a shared file.
What was demonstrated
The showcase run uses seven agent roles — team lead, lyricist, composer, arranger, lead vocalist, backup vocalist and interlude specialist — to produce a pop track as 12 deliverable files, including audio, lyrics, composition plans and arrangement summaries. A separate claim puts cluster mode at 200 slides in 20 minutes.
Treat the numbers as vendor claims
These are demonstrations, not measured throughput, with no baseline and no third-party run. The benchmark figures circulating alongside the launch could not be verified against the project's own materials and are left out here for that reason.
What it is not
Not a Huawei product launch: openJiuwen is a community platform Huawei divisions co-build, and the licence, branding and repository sit outside Huawei's product line. Not a new model either — this is an orchestration layer over existing LLMs. And not a first release: it is an upgrade of JiuwenSwarm, whose repository was created on 5 March and carries Apache-2.0, 3,068 stars and 470 forks, with its most recent push on 15 August.
Why the store matters more than the demo
Shipping to HarmonyOS PC first puts an agent framework built by Huawei research and cloud divisions into Huawei's own desktop distribution channel, under an open licence. The domestic stack is closing on itself — silicon, operating system, app store and now the agent layer.
