Microsoft is OpenAI's largest backer and resells Anthropic's models inside its own software. According to Bloomberg, it is also training its sales force to talk both of them down.

Reporter Brody Ford wrote on July 15 that Microsoft executives used an internal meeting on strategy for fiscal 2027, which began this month, to coach salespeople to compare AI products from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic unfavorably with Microsoft's own along three axes: lower cost, better security controls and a more complete end-to-end suite. The account rests on internal presentations and people familiar with the meeting — Microsoft has neither confirmed nor denied it.

Executive vice president Jay Parikh reportedly told staff: "Everyone else is selling parts — we're selling the full end-to-end system. That's the story that we all need to get out there and tell in FY27." Copilot EVP Jacob Andreou is said to have presented a side-by-side deck comparing Copilot with Anthropic's Claude, arguing that within Microsoft's office applications the rival model was "slower and less accurate, and lacked the proper security integrations." CEO Satya Nadella anchored the cost argument, saying the ability to monitor AI spending and reach for cheaper models would be a primary customer concern this year, and citing Unilever automating claims processing on Microsoft's platform for a projected $300 million in savings. These are sales assertions reported secondhand, not benchmark results.
Why it is awkward
Microsoft has put more than $13 billion into OpenAI since 2019. Under the October 2025 restructuring that turned OpenAI into a public benefit corporation, Microsoft holds roughly 27% and retains model and IP access through 2032 — but lost its exclusive cloud rights. The partnership was revamped again in April 2026, winding down exclusivity and capping revenue-share payments. Anthropic, meanwhile, is a supplier: Claude runs inside Copilot and Office. So the reported deck has Microsoft disparaging both an investee and a vendor.
The backdrop
The push tracks a broader shift. Microsoft has been swapping OpenAI and Anthropic models out of Word, Excel and Outlook in favor of its in-house MAI models to cut costs — reported separately by Bloomberg on July 7. Anthropic declined to comment. Microsoft declined to comment on the sales strategy. OpenAI did not respond.
