Index Ventures said on Friday it has raised $2 billion across three funds, and that it now has $3.5 billion of investing capital available. Both numbers need unpacking before they mean anything.

The three vehicles are not three new funds

The breakdown is a $400 million seed fund, a $900 million venture fund, and $700 million added to the growth fund Index raised in 2024 — taking that vehicle from $1.5 billion to $2.2 billion. So $1.3 billion is new, and $700 million is a top-up to a two-year-old fund. "Index raises $2 billion in three new funds" is not quite what happened.

And $3.5 billion is a different measure

That figure is total available investing capital across all vehicles — dry powder, including capital raised previously. It is not the size of this raise, and the two numbers should not appear in the same sentence without that distinction.

Where the money is coming from

The raise is being tied to Index's payout from the Wiz sale to Alphabet, a $32 billion exit that returned a great deal of capital to a small number of funds. That is context rather than a stated source: limited partners commit from their own balance sheets, and Index has not said that distributions from Wiz were recycled into these vehicles. The connection is that a firm which has just returned billions finds fundraising easy.

The seed number is the signal

At $400 million, the seed fund is the part worth watching. Seed-stage cheques into AI companies have been inflating for two years, and a fund that size implies writing them at a scale that used to be Series A.

Why the growth fund needed topping up

The $700 million extension is the quieter signal. A growth vehicle raised in 2024 running short two years in means the firm is deploying faster than it planned, which in the current market means writing larger cheques into companies whose valuations moved between rounds. Adding to an existing fund rather than raising a new one is also the faster route — no new fund terms, no new closing process, the same limited partners topping up a vehicle they already know.
